ATLANTA – As part of its local community efforts and commitment to conservation, Manheim Pennsylvania teamed up with American Rivers on Saturday, June 9 to clean the Conestoga River in Lancaster County Central Park.
More than 100 Manheim employees and their family members cleaned up debris from the river and surrounding park area from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. American Rivers volunteers joined in the clean-up efforts.
“We are delighted to partner with Manheim Pennsylvania to protect and restore the Conestoga River for the benefit of the community,” said Lynsey Knowles, National River Cleanup® Campaign Manager, American Rivers. “Keeping our rivers healthy and clean contributes to safety, the availability of clean water and preserves our beautiful national heritage for future generations.”
Volunteers picked up trash and disposed of garbage along a one-mile stretch of the Conestoga River and Lancaster County Central Park area.
“Our team was very excited about being involved in such a worthwhile effort that supports conservation and our local communities,” said Tim Van Dam, VP and General Manager of Manheim Pennsylvania. “Manheim Pennsylvania employees and their families are committed to lending a hand in restoring and improving our parks and rivers for all who visit and enjoy the surrounding area.”
Manheim is part of Cox Enterprises and participates in Cox Conserves, the company’s national sustainability program. Through Cox’s partnership with American Rivers, company employees have collected more than 4.5 tons of trash during river cleanups.
To further support their commitment to conservation, Manheim Pennsylvania will retrofit all pole mounted outdoor lighting fixtures with more energy efficient lamps as well as a new control system to allow the scheduling and dimming of individual fixtures to maximize energy savings. With their Water Conservation Center, Manheim Pennsylvania treats 42,000 gallons of wastewater and produces 25,000 gallons of high-quality reusable water per day. Annually, the system extracts 68 tons of contaminants from wastewater, the weight equivalent of 12 male elephants, enabling Manheim to return treated water to the municipal water treatment system in a pretreated condition.
